Methodology
Rankings use an Elo-based algorithm that adjusts for opponent strength, match importance, and recency.
Key Features
Beating strong teams counts more than beating weak teams
Bigger wins increase rating more, with diminishing returns
Recent matches weighted more heavily (210-day half-life)
Teams with few games get dampened adjustments to prevent volatility
Goal differential and form standardized to prevent outliers
Note: Teams need minimum 3 matches to be ranked. Confidence increases with match count.
Match Importance
Different competitions have different importance weights:
Elite Tournaments (1.5x)
World Cup, Olympics, UWCL Finals
Major Competitions (1.3-1.4x)
Champions League, Continental Championships
League Matches (1.0x)
Domestic league games
Friendlies (0.6x)
Non-competitive matches
